More than 130 people are confirmed dead and dozens more remain missing after sudden flash floods devastated central Texas over the weekend. The Guadalupe River rose a staggering 26 feet in under an hour following torrential rain, with Kerr County suffering the worst losses. Among the missing are 10 young girls from Camp Mystic, a summer camp located along the riverbank. The disaster is raising urgent questions about emergency preparedness and the role of federal budget cuts. Retired NOAA meteorologist Alan Gerard warns that staffing shortages at the National Weather Service—caused by Trump-era budget cuts—could be affecting the nation’s ability to respond to extreme weather. With hurricane season just beginning, concerns are mounting over what’s to come.
